Have I written yet about C. G. Jung’s idea of synchronicity – what he sometimes called ‘meaningful coinicdences’? If not, I’m starting today.
In case you’re not familiar with the concept, I’ll give you an example I’ve just put into my coming book, Autism Dreaming. Some years ago I dreamt dead foetuses, some human, some not, night after night for about a week. Then one morning I met, in the center of the doormat outside my door, five dead mouse foetuses. I was stunned then, and I am again writing it now. If you want to know more about that incident, you’ll have to wait on my book.
Three days ago when I came into my local McDonalds for an afternoon coffee, and put my order through the electronic kiosk, I got a receipt showing my customer number as 600.
I had the thought that, since McD’s introduced this system, I don’t think I’ve ever got a ’00’ number (I pay a lot of attention to numbers). Yesterday I came in and got ‘700’. Just now, coming in to work on the book some more, I got ‘800’.
So, of course, I’m left wondering. This is not a ‘meaningful coincidence’, as far as I can tell. But what qualifies as meaningful? My first thought in response to that question is that there’s a playfulness behind these numbers.
I’m reminded of Gloucester in King Lear – “As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods, they kill us for their sport.”
No one is trying to kill me, as far as I know, but I do have this feeling that I’m being played with.
Psychiatrist John Mack, who was interested in paranormal phenomena most of his life, said that when you pay attention to synchronicities, their frequency increases. He said it can turn into a flood. If you find that interesting, there will be a chapter on Mack in Autism Dreaming.

Some periods of my life seems to be loaded with synchronicities. At times they help me get through because I feel somebody is trying to say ‘keep it up’. At other times they just bewilder me. I’d like to hear more about what you think is going on with the McD numbers!

Yes, the fact that the occurrence of these things seems to vary, tells us something about them, but what?
As for the McD numbers – well – the only thing I can tell you is that the next time I was there I got 666 – again I felt I was being played with.
Now it seems to be back to normal.
